Well Woman Exam Q & A

What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam, or OB/GYN checkup, at The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center, is one of the most important services available to ensure you stay healthy and treat medical conditions before they become serious.

Compassionate nurse midwives provide the complete scope of gynecological services for women of all ages, including:

  • Annual physicals
  • Routine pelvic exams
  • Pap tests
  • Birth control
  • Fertility treatments
  • Vaccinations
  • Nutrition counseling

They get to know each patient, listen to them, and maintain ongoing relationships throughout the years to help women maintain exceptional health and wellness.

What should I expect during a well-woman exam?

During well-woman exams at The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center, your provider completes the following:

Vital signs check/medical history review

Your family medicine specialist checks your weight, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs. They ask questions about your medical history, including medications you may take, past diagnoses, and symptoms you might have.

Physical and pelvic exams

During the physical exam portion of the visit, your midwife examines your eyes, ears, throat, breathing, heartbeat, and reflexes. They complete a pelvic exam to evaluate your reproductive organs. Your specialist inserts a speculum into your vagina and evaluates your cervix and other tissues. They may take a tissue sample during a Pap test to screen for signs of cervical cancer.

Breast exams

During a breast exam, your nurse-midwife checks for lumps and abnormal-looking breast tissue. They may recommend you undergo a mammogram to get an in-depth analysis of your breast tissue.

Treatments (as needed)

If you require treatment for any reason, your nurse-midwife discusses treatment options with you that might include medications, minor medical procedures, or further diagnostic testing. Your midwife can refer you to specialists as needed if you have a serious medical problem or OB/GYN-related complication.

When should I schedule a well-woman exam?

As a rule, schedule a wellness exam every year or if you experience new or unusual symptoms. Your midwife may recommend more frequent visits if you have a chronic disease or other medical problem.
