Postpartum Care Q & A

What is postpartum care?

Postpartum care includes medical evaluation and treatment as needed for mothers after they deliver their babies. The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center staff members are always on call in case of emergencies or to respond to any concerns you may have. The team makes sure you have everything needed to ensure a safe pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum experience.

What happens during postpartum care?

The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center team’s commitment to natural childbirth doesn’t stop after you give birth. Nurse-midwives support you on your motherhood journey every step of the way.

During postpartum care at The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center, your nurse-midwife monitors your health after delivery. They offer the following:

Vital signs check

Your midwife checks your vital signs, including your pulse, weight, and blood pressure. They also discuss symptoms you may have or medications you take.

Physical examination

Your midwife completes a physical exam after delivery to ensure you stay in good health. They can detect potential problems before complications occur for you or your baby. If you’ve had a C-section, they examine your incision site to ensure it heals properly.

Diagnostic testing

Your specialist may recommend you undergo urine tests, blood tests, or other diagnostic tests as needed to get the full picture of your health.

Lactation and nutrition counseling

The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center provides breastfeeding support and addresses questions or concerns you have about feeding your baby. Your specialist offers lactation and nutrition counseling to increase you and your baby’s chance of maintaining proper nutrition.

How often should I schedule postpartum care visits?

Your practitioner can let you know how often to schedule postpartum care appointments after you deliver your baby, as every patient is different. They often examine you soon after giving birth and periodically over the next few weeks and months. You may need more frequent evaluations if you have a chronic disease or complications related to pregnancy or delivery.

Call The Childbirth and Women’s Wellness Center office any time you experience new or unusual symptoms, changes in mood, difficulty feeding your baby, or questions or concerns about motherhood.
